Cashing Your Wedding Checks
Important Information
- Add your fiancé to your account in advance so it's easier to cash checks.
- The bride needs to present her driver's license and the marriage certificate in person as proof of the marriage in order to take checks in her married name. If she has changed her name at the Secretary of State's office, a marriage certificate isn't needed.
- Once the bride has legally changed her name through the Secretary of State, the driver's license number on the account also needs to be changed.
- The bride's name needs to be changed on the account first before checks can be ordered for the couple in their married name (a marriage certificate is needed).
- To eliminate identity problems, the bride needs to change her name at work as soon as possible so that payroll checks are made payable to her married name.
- Brides should keep a copy of the marriage certificate or a new driver's license on hand until all gifts have been received. This will prevent problems if checks are made payable to the bride's maiden name.
- Count CASH and checks several times before you make the deposit in order to verify the amount with the Teller.
Endorsing Your Checks
- When a check is made payable to the bride in her married name, she only needs to sign her married name. If the check is made payable to her maiden name, she needs to endorse the check in her maiden name and in her married name.
- If the check says "Michelle and Jason Smith," Michelle would sign "Michelle Smith," and Jason would sign "Jason Smith."
- When the check is made payable to "Mr. and Mrs.," it needs to be endorsed by both the bride and the groom with their full names. For example, a check made payable to "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" would be endorsed by Michelle as "Michelle Smith," and by Jason as "Jason Smith."
- If the check is made payable to "Michelle or Jason Smith," either person could endorse it.
- If you aren't sure how to endorse a check, both the bride and groom should sign it.
- Sometimes guests are unsure of the groom's last name and make the check payable to the bride's full name and the groom's first name. In this case, both of you should endorse the back of the check with your full names.
